Hello

Welcome to Sofia Psychological Associates

Healing Through Connection

Trauma Therapy

Our trauma therapy sessions are designed to help clients heal from the effects of trauma, such as PTSD, childhood abuse, and sexual assault. We use evidence-based treatments, such as EMDR, Prolonged Exposure for PTSD, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), to help clients process their trauma and develop coping skills to manage symptoms.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

We are highly trained and specialized in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Trained by Dr. Linehan's BehaviorTech, we provide full-scale DBT to adolescents and adults. We provide support for those experiencing crisis, suicidality, substance use, trauma, and difficulties with regulation through DBT.

Psychological Assessment

We provide comprehensive psychological assessment for a wide age range for concerns such as learning disorder, ADHD, autism, health psychology, and mental health.

Cultural Identity

Our cultural identity sessions help clients explore their cultural identity and its impact on their mental health and well-being. We help clients understand the ways in which their cultural background shapes their beliefs and values, and work with them to develop strategies to manage cultural stressors and build resilience.

About Dr. Copeland

Kimberly A. Copeland, Psy.D. is a distinguished embedded military psychologist working with special forces operators and their families. In her career, she has focused heavily on training and supervision as a Deployment Behavioral Health Psychologist affiliated with the Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP), the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, adjunct professorship roles, and in ongoing training as the team lead of a multistate DBT team that provides clinical rotations for doctoral level psychology trainees. In her role with CDP and USUHS, Dr. Copeland was physically based at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, where she served as a core faculty member for the teaching hospital’s psychology practicum, pre-doctoral psychology internship, post-doctoral psychology fellowship, and psychiatry training programs. Her responsibilities included teaching and supervising a diverse cohort of interns and residents within the Navy’s APA-accredited Pre-doctoral internship and Postdoctoral fellowship programs, specifically providing training in DBT, PTSD treatments, and multicultural competence. She was also an associate investigator in a multimillion dollar clinical study funded by the Joint Warfighters to compare evidence-based PTSD treatments in active duty service members. Beyond her direct supervisory duties, Dr. Copeland has also been instrumental in providing comprehensive training and consultation in evidence-based treatments to a wide range of healthcare professionals, including psychiatry residents, nurses, and social workers, all dedicated to serving active-duty service members and their families. Before joining CDP, Dr. Copeland honed her clinical expertise at Portsmouth Naval’s Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation Program, where she gained invaluable experience in addressing the complex needs of military personnel facing substance abuse challenges. Dr. Copeland is intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and has been practicing DBT since 1999, as a student helping to stand up a comprehensive DBT program within a young women's residential therapy program. She is also the DBT Team Lead clinician for a comprehensive DBT program for Naval Special Warfare, which she started in 2020. Dr. Copeland is currently the team lead of a multistate DBT team that specializes in providing affirming care to neurodivergent teens and adults. Prior to her professional roles, Dr. Copeland’s academic journey is marked by a strong foundation in both the biological and psychological sciences. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from James Madison University, which provided her with a robust understanding of the physiological underpinnings of health. Subsequently, she pursued her master’s and doctorate degrees in clinical psychology from Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA, where she further developed her skills in psychological assessment and intervention. Her doctoral training was further enriched by her participation in the prestigious Vanderbilt University VA Medical Center Consortium. During that time, Dr. Copeland completed various intensive rotations at both the Murfreesboro and Nashville VA Hospitals, gaining exposure to a broad spectrum of patient populations and clinical presentations. Concurrently, she also gained invaluable experience working at the university medical center. Following her doctoral studies, Dr. Copeland dedicated herself to postdoctoral training, specializing in working with children and military families within a residential hospital setting. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a remarkable ability to work with a diverse group of patients across various settings, consistently providing in-depth psychological and neuropsychological assessment and therapy with a high degree of skill and compassion.

Dr. Copeland's professional interests are broad and reflect her commitment to addressing critical mental health needs within the military and broader community. Her key areas of focus include the effective treatment of anxiety and depression, two prevalent conditions that can significantly impact well-being. She also possesses a profound interest and expertise in the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related conditions, recognizing the profound impact of trauma on individuals and families. Furthermore, Dr. Copeland is deeply committed to working with military families, understanding the unique challenges and stressors they face due to the demands of military life. Her personal experience and background have given her a heart for working with families negatively impacted by war. Finally, a cornerstone of her professional philosophy is a dedication to multicultural competency within both treatment and training settings, ensuring that psychological services are culturally sensitive and effective for all individuals.
